Wegovy vs. Zepbound: What’s the Difference?

If you’re thinking about medication for weight loss, you’ve probably heard the same two names over and over:

Wegovy and Zepbound.

One person says Zepbound works better. Someone else had great results with Wegovy. Then there are side effects, insurance, cost, compounded medications, and about a thousand opinions online about which one you should choose.

Pretty quickly, a simple question turns into a lot to sort through.

But here’s the part that often gets missed:

You don’t actually need to know which medication you want before you start getting help.

That’s how we approach weight management at Shift. You start with what you’re trying to accomplish, not with a medication you’ve already chosen. A licensed clinician can look at your health, your goals, the medications you take, and other things that matter to help you decide what may be a good fit.

Maybe that’s Wegovy. Maybe it’s Zepbound. Maybe it’s something else.

Figuring that out is part of the care, not homework you have to finish before it.

So if you’re trying to understand the difference between Wegovy and Zepbound, let’s make it simple.

Wegovy and Zepbound aren’t the same medication

Wegovy contains semaglutide. Zepbound contains tirzepatide.

Wegovy works on something in your body called GLP-1. Zepbound works on GLP-1 plus something else called GIP.

There’s a lot more science behind it, but here’s what matters:

They’re different medications, and they may work differently for different people.

Does Zepbound work better than Wegovy?

This is probably the part you’ve heard about.

In a 72-week study of 751 adults with obesity who did not have diabetes, people taking tirzepatide lost about 20.2% of their body weight on average. People taking semaglutide lost about 13.7% on average.1

So yes, Zepbound led to more weight loss on average in that study.

That’s important.

But it’s not the whole answer.

Your health, the medications you already take, side effects, your goals, cost, and what you can get all matter too.

So instead of only asking:

“Which one led to more weight loss?”

There’s another question that matters even more:

“Which one makes sense for me?”

That’s a much easier question to answer with a clinician than by yourself on Google.

What does that look like with Shift?

Pretty simple.

If you’re in Utah, you can start with a $99 weight-management visit. There’s no monthly Shift membership.

And you don’t have to pick Wegovy or Zepbound first.

You tell your clinician what you’re trying to do, what you’ve tried before, what medications you take, and what’s important to you.

They can help you understand your options and decide what makes sense. If medication is right for you, they can talk with you about things like benefits, side effects, cost, and how you can get it.

Medication is separate from the cost of your Shift visit.

And if you find a clinician you like, you can choose to see them again when they’re available.

The goal isn’t to give you another list of things to research.

It’s to help you make sense of the choices.

What about compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide?

That’s a different question, and it deserves its own answer.

Compounded medications aren’t simply generic versions of Wegovy or Zepbound. They aren’t FDA approved, which means the FDA doesn’t review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they’re sold.2

We’ll cover the differences in another Shift Answer.

So, Wegovy or Zepbound?

Zepbound led to more weight loss on average in a study comparing the two.

But Wegovy and Zepbound are different medications. One may be a better fit for you than the other.

That’s the part a study can’t answer for you.

That’s also why Shift doesn’t ask you to come in already knowing which medication you want.

Start with what you’re trying to accomplish. Your Shift clinician can help you decide what makes sense for you.
